Which Laser Treatment is Right for You?
Lynda Valdez, RNC, MSN, FNP
For facial rejuvenation, The Med Spa at Daireds offers two of the most advanced laser techniques available for facial rejuvenation, the Fraxel re:pair and StarLux 1540. But, if you are like most women, you are unsure which laser treatment would be best for your particular concerns.
Before choosing which laser is optimal for you, it is important to understand facts about each. Both lasers are “fractionated,” meaning that the lasers move across the face treating the skin in microscopic columns. Fractionated treatments have been found to give excellent results without the pain and side effects of treating all of the skin at one time. Depending on the settings of the laser, approximately 25 to 35 percent of the entire surface is treated.
The Fraxel re:pair laser is a carbon dioxide laser that vaporizes or removes skin in microscopic columns of heat into the dermis while sparing the top layer of the skin. These heated columns coagulate and stimulate the body’s healing mechanisms to replace these columns with new dermis and new epidermis. Treatments are done in a series, normally three to four, approximately three weeks apart. There is no downtime involved so you can return to work the following day. This laser is excellent for improving the quality and texture of the skin, but it is especially effective in improving the appearance of scars such as acne scars or stretch marks. When a scar forms, it is because the “new” skin does not “lay down” in an organized way. The StarLux 1540 “remodels” or “reorganizes” the scar, drastically improving the appearance and, because it is done in a series, up to 90 percent of the scar is treated.
So, which laser is right for you? The Fraxel re:pair will give you tighter, more beautiful skin, but there is downtime involved. The StarLux 1540, because it is done in a series, requires no downtime and treats approximately 90 percent of the skin by the time the series is complete. It is especially effective for acne scarring and stretch marks.
