Look Younger Longer - Prevention Begins in Your 20s
More and more, the terms Botox, dermal fillers, and laser skin rejuvenation is mentioned in the media, in popular women’s magazines and in conversation. For the most part, we associate the use of these products with women who are actively fighting the visible signs of aging. But, these procedures also have relevance to younger, twenty-somethings who might not have overt signs of aging but are concerned with preventing and maintaining their skin’s health and appearance.
For instance, Botox can be injected in the forehead, brow area, and around the crow’s feet to prevent and soften lines. If Botox use begins in one’s twenties, before wrinkles have become deeply etched into the skin, many lines can be prevented. Botox injections should be repeated every three to four months within the first year of treatment, with subsequent treatments requiring smaller amounts of medicine. After the first year, less frequent injections may be needed.
Dermal fillers such as Restylane, Radiesse and Juvederm can also be used to treat cosmetic issues among younger women. The most common procedure among this younger age bracket is enhancement of the lips with either Juvederm or Restylane. This can be done to enlarge naturally small lips or to restore volume that may begin to be lost in the twenties. A fuller lip often makes the face look softer, more feminine and enhancement of this area is a subtle way to maintain a youthful appearance. Fillers can also be used to enhance the under eye area also known as the tear trough. This refers to the deep indentions under the eye that are a result of genetics, a stressful, fast paced lifestyle or early aging. The troughs cause shadows that give the face a perpetually tired appearance. A dermal filler can be placed in this area to plump the area and reduce the shadow caused by the trough, thus producing a dramatically fresher, more well rested appearance.
In addition, fillers can be used soften the area running from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth, often referred to as the nasolabial folds. Generally, this area shows the first signs of aging in one’s mid to late twenties in the form of faint lines. By injecting filler into this area deep wrinkles and folds can be prevented. The lasting effects of the fillers will differ depending on what type is used. Radiesse, used to fill nasolabial folds and the tear trough area, will last approximately one year. Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane, originally thought to last only six to eight months, has recently been approved by the FDA for lasting approximately 12 months.
