What Exactly IS a Facial?

Most people have heard of the term “facial” or seen it on a spa menu, but still aren't really sure what to expect or what benefits make it worth the time and money. So, let’s break down the basics of a facial treatment and the positive effects it can have on the skin.

Basic Steps:

Analysis: Upon arrival you’ll complete a brief skin analysis form to answer a few quick questions about your skin type and any concerns you may want to address. Once in the treatment room and comfortable, the esthetician will take a close look at your skin by covering your eyes and using a brightly lit magnifying lamp to examine the condition of your skin. A suitable combination of skincare products will be selected and questions you may have about the condition of your skin or about the treatment will be discussed.

Cleansing: The treatment begins with a thorough cleanse with a product chosen for your skin type to remove makeup or residue on the skin and is followed by a warm aromatherapy scented towel to gently remove the product.

Exfoliation: A gentle Enzyme Peeling Cream is used to exfoliate and gently slough away built up dead skin cells and leave the skin ultra soft.

Hydration: The next step is a relaxing facial massage using a hydrating mask and warm steam to further calm and moisturize the skin.

Extractions: When the skin is completely clean and well hydrated, the esthetician takes another close look to examine the skin and deep clean any pores that are clogged or congested with blackheads and whiteheads. The extractions are one of the most important parts of the facial if needed because a skilled esthetician can remove them safely with less chance of damaging the skin than if you attempt this on your own. Extractions can be painful for some people. It’s important to give feedback to you esthetician as she works.

Additional Cleansing and Hydration: The extractions are followed by a decongesting scrub to further exfoliate and kill bacteria. Another mask is applied and allowed to set while you enjoy a relaxing shoulder, neck and hand massage. Once the mask is removed with a warm towel, a combination of active treatment products including eye creams, omega-3 vitamins, moisturizers and of course sunscreen are applied.

Advice and Recommendations: Once the facial has concluded, the esthetician will take time to answer questions and make suggestions regarding future treatments and/or skincare product recommendations for use at home on a daily basis for even better results. At this point you're relaxed and your skin feels amazingly clean and soft!

Your Next Visit: Regularly scheduled facials are beneficial to the skin in so many ways. Not only are they great for correcting and clearing up problem, breakout prone skin types, but also for keeping and maintaining a healthy, youthful complexion. A professional facial is recommended about once a month for healthy, hydrated skin. Not only will you love the relaxing spa experience, but also the way your skin looks and feels!
